The New York Cultural Heritage Tourism Network is an organization of small, medium and large museum attractions, historical societies, businesses and individuals working together to promote arts, culture and heritage to and within New York State.
What is the major goal? Very simply - To promote cultural heritage tourism through education and marketing.
What has the Network accomplished? The Network has completed the first ever systematic computerized fifty-five county inventory of all arts, culture and heritage resources. This listing includes nearly 2400 venues that have been divided into nine specialized categories:
1. Museums & Related Organizations
2. Women’s Rights & Heritage
3. Underground Railroad, Abolition & Religious Movements
4. Erie Canalway Heritage
5. Native American Culture
6. Historic Tours, Sites and Markers
7. Agriculture Food and Farms
8. Tourism Related Venues
9. Arts, Galleries and Arts Organizations
In addition, during the past year the Network has moved to incorporate as a non-profit corporation, has produced a five year Strategic Plan, a two year Work Plan and created its first board of directors to provide direction and continuity for the Network future.
What about Future Plans? Educational symposiums and workshops have been produced each year since inception and will certainly continue. To celebrate the 100th Anniversary (1917 - 2017) of women's right to vote in New York State the Network has produced the women's suffrage and history website (nywomenshistory.com). This site provides information on New York's suffrage movement including biographies on the women who gave so much to make suffrage a reality, three-year events calendar, and myriad workshops and seminars. The first Women's Suffrage Centennial Conference was held last October in Seneca Falls
The Network is also deeply involved with the NYS Canal Corporation and Erie Canalway groups to highlight the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal (1817 - 2017) and its' many celebrations and educational workshops.
